Day 36 (Job 35:1-37:24 | Matthew 24:1-31 | Proverbs 4:1-9)

Day 36
Job 35:1-37:24
(35 | 36 | 37)

Elihu claims God ignores the wicked when they cry out because of their arrogance. Elihu further claims that God is more likely to ignore Job because he reckons he can't see God move, nor does he think God takes any action against the wicked. Elihu goes on to say that God doesn't hate men, and that actually the reason Job doesn't see what God is doing is because he has the wrong perspective; God isn't keeping the wicked alive, rather he preserves the rights of those afflicted by the wicked.

He says God teaches those who sin; they only have to ask forgiveness and to be shown what they've done wrong. God is trying to draw Job out of the situation he's in, he just has to listen to God instead of external stuff such as wealth. Elihu finishes by expressing how awesome God is. As a result, men worship him, and God looks after the wise (which as we learned yesterday is someone who fears the LORD).

I apologise for the lack of any real commentary here. I'm just not really sure what to say. It seems I'm not the only one who struggles to understand what's going on, though, so I'm okay with that.

Matthew 24:1-31
(24:1-31)

The disciples come to Jesus and ask him about the end of times. More specifically, they ask when it will happen and how we'll know when he has returned. Jesus cannot answer the first question because only the Father knows when it will happen. The second, however, he can answer. When Jesus returns, it will be obvious. Everyone will know without needing to be told. However, before that happens, the followers of Jesus will suffer persecution and death. As a result, people will turn away from the faith. But anyone who perseveres will be saved. It sounds so easy! Jesus also warns us of the coming of false prophets claiming to be the Christ. These false prophets will garner many followers, and will even perform signs and wonders to try to prove their authenticity. Essentially, Jesus is saying that if anyone turns up claiming to be the Christ, they are a false prophet. If people turn up giving reports of the return of the Christ, then they're probably talking about a false prophet. When Christ does return, we'll know about it. It doesn't matter where it happens, we'll know, in the same way that we know there's a thunderstorm in the distance; we aren't experiencing it ourselves, but we can see and hear that it is happening.

Proverbs 4:1-9
(4:1-9)

This section is titled "Wisdom is Supreme", and essentially speaks of the benefits of wisdom. Wisdom is personified, and presented as a woman who can protect, exalt and honour you, if only you have wisdom, and hold it in the highest regard.
