Day 53 (Exodus 31:1-33:6 | Mark 6:30-56 | Psalm 25:1-7)

Day 53
Exodus 31:1 - 33:6
(31 | 32 | 33:1-6)

God names two men - Bezalel and Oholiab - as two craftsmen he has given the ability to do the work he requires. He says he has given various other men the ability to complete these works too. God also declares that the Israelites are to keep the Sabbath holy - they are to do this by abstaining from work on the Sabbath. The punishment for anyone caught breaking this law is death.

Once he's finished speaking, the LORD gives Moses two tablets inscribed with his commandments. Remember, Moses had been up Mount Sinai this whole time. Down at the bottom, the Israelites have grown bored. Moses has been gone for so long at this stage that the Israelites decide he's gone M.I.A.; they say "we don't know what has happened to him". They demand Aaron make them an idol for them to follow.

So Aaron takes gold jewellery from the Israelites, and makes an idol in the shape of a calf. The Israelites hold a festival in honour of the LORD. However, the calf angers God. When Moses gets back to the bottom of Mount Sinai and sees the calf he's furious. In his fury, he smashes the two tablets bearing the commandments, and casts the golden calf into the fire. Aaron tells Moses that the calf just appeared when he put the gold in the fire; in other words, he's denying that he fashioned the calf out of gold himself.

Moses calls to him all who care for the LORD. The assembled group then goes through the camp killing every male who isn't part of the group. In total, about three thousand people die that day.

Mark 6:30-56
(6:30-56)

The twelve come back, and Jesus tries to take them somewhere quiet to debrief them. However, the people follow. Jesus ends up feeding the five thousand (minimum - the text says five thousand men, plus the women and children!) with five loaves of bread and two fish.

After this, the disciples go out on the lake while Jesus prays on the mountainside. He then heads off after them, catching up with them in the middle of the lake, by foot to the terror of the disciples.

When they reach the other side, the sick are brought to Jesus, and he heals them.

Psalm 25:1-7
(25:1-7)

David puts his trust in the LORD. He asks God to show him how to walk; to guide and teach him. David asks God to be merciful and forget the sins he committed in his youth.
