Day 54
Exodus 33:7-34:35
(33:7-23 | 34)
Moses has another tent of meeting (all lower case) outside the Israelite camp which he uses to meet with God. Moses begs God to travel with the Israelites to the Promised Land. (In yesterday's passage, God said he wouldn't travel with them for fear of destroying them in anger.)
God then instructs Moses to carve out two new tablets and take them up Mount Sinai. Moses spends 40 days and nights up the mountain, and finally comes back with the commandments. Initially, the people are afraid of him as his face is radiant. Eventually, he is able to speak to Aaron and the elders, and then the rest of the Israelites. When he speaks to them, he relays all of the commandments given to him on Mount Sinai to the Israelites. Once he has finished, he covers his face with a veil so that people won't be afraid of him. This becomes something of a habit; every time Moses meets with God, he comes back radiant, relays God's message, before covering his face.
Mark 7:1-30
(7:1-30)
The Pharisees ask Jesus why his disciples insist on flouting one of their traditions by not washing their hands before eating. Jesus has a go at them for holding their traditions above the word of God. He then declares to the gathered crowds that it is what comes out of a man's heart, not what goes into his mouth, that makes him unclean.
Jesus heals the daughter of a Syro-Phoenician woman, seemingly because he likes her answer to his riddle; Jesus' mandate at this time is just to tend to the lost sheep of Israel but, (to borrow the metaphor used in the text) just as a dog can eat the crumbs from a child's food of the floor while the child is still eating, the people whose turn to receive Jesus' help had not yet come could still receive it if they took the opportunity to get it. Or at least that's my take on it. If anyone can shed any other light on this, please let me know.
Psalm 25:8-15
(25:8-15)
David proclaims that God is good and his ways are loving and faithful. David again asks God to forgive his prior sins, and says that only those who fear the LORD will receive instruction in his ways. That makes sense really; if you didn't fear the LORD, you wouldn't care about his covenant with the Israelites, so you wouldn't care about, or want to fulfil his instructions in how to uphold humanity's end of the deal.
